COL 1, PIT 0: Penguins power play fails in loss to Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche used good goaltending and an outstanding penalty kill to sneak past the Pittsburgh Penguins and improve their record to 8-1-0.

Here is what you need to know:

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins struggled with the man advantage, going 0-8 after coming into the game with the second best power play in the NHL (motoring along at a 28% clip).
  • Jean-Sebastien Giguere found a DeLorean, punched it to 88 MPH and traveled back to 2003 with this performance. Giguere made 34 stops including a spectacular game saver in the third period (no word on whether or not he brought a 'Gray's Sports Almanac' with him).

  • Marc-Andre Fleury, who came into the season with a lot of questions hanging over his head after losing his starting job during last year's playoffs, was handed his first loss of the season.
  • Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog scored the only goal of the game, beating Fleury with a low wrister early in the second period. It was the 20-year-old's third goal in as many games.
