Roy is helping Varlamov change his style
With the Shadow of Patrick Roy looming over him, Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov is changing his style in hopes of having a bounce back season.
Under the tutelage of Roy and new goaltending coach Francoise Allaire, Varlamov is learning to keep his glove higher, something Roy says will ultimately make him a better goalie.
“When he’s gonna face a shooter, the shooter is gonna see less,” Roy said. “That’s the first big change for him. And you know what? He’s extremely receptive. I think the connection right now with Francois is great, and I think he’s going to have a huge impact on this organization.”
Varlamov, who was acquired from the Washington Capitals in 2011, is entering the final year of his contract and will need to have a good season to cement himself as the Avalanche's goaltender of the future.
