Report: Bears plan to split carries between Forte, Langford moving forward

It's not quite Lou Gehrig replacing Wally Pipp, but Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte's playing time may be in jeopardy.

Forte will remain as the nominal starter due to his veteran status, but will split carries with rookie standout Jeremy Langford, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Langford started in Forte's absence over the past three games, and rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns, while adding a receiving touchdown.

"(Forte) is expected to be the starter - mainly because of his veteran status - but I am told he will be the starter in name only," Rapoport said on NFL Network. "The plan is to have a two-headed monster, two rotated backs, because Jeremy Langford did impress, and inside the organization, they believe that he is the future at running back.

"And in fact, not just the future but the present because they think he is better suited for this offense and more explosive. That 83-yard screen pass ... he took to the house (in Week 10), they think for Forte that would have just been a 30-yarder."

Forte becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, and it appears that Langford is becoming the team's running back of the future.
