The San Francisco 49ers started the process of cutting down to their final 53-man roster by releasing veteran defensive lineman Darnell Dockett, Pro Football Talk reports.

The 34-year-old signed a two-year deal with the 49ers in March. The team will reportedly save $3.25 million as a result of Dockett's release.

Dockett is attempting to come back from a torn ACL that cost him all of last season. Despite the 49ers' lack of depth on defense, Dockett failed to differentiate himself from the team's younger, cheaper options.

Glenn Dorsey, Ian Williams, and Quinton Dial appear set to begin the season as the 49ers' starting defensive linemen. First-rounder Arik Armstead and 2013 second-rounder Tank Carradine are also in the mix.
