Report: Broncos' Antonio Smith under investigation in child abuse case

Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

Denver Broncos defensive end Antonio Smith is being investigated for child abuse in Texas, TMZ Sports reports.

No charges have been laid, but the Fort Bend County district attorney confirmed local authorities are looking into allegations. A source told TMZ that Smith was involved in multiple incidents of abuse dating back to 2010.

Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls described a complaint made against Smith in November 2014 as "sexual in nature," according to the Associated Press.

"Last night, we became aware for the first time of an allegation involving Antonio Smith," the Broncos said Thursday in a statement. "We are now in the process of gathering more information."

Smith played for the Houston Texans from 2009 to 2013.

He signed a one-year deal with the Broncos in April.
