Report: 49ers expected to release Stevie Johnson

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to release wide receiver Stevie Johnson, according to NBC's Dianna Marie Russini

The move would free over $5.5 million in cap space for the 49ers.

San Francisco acquired Johnson from the Buffalo Bills for a conditional fourth-round draft pick, but the 28-year-old failed to meet expectations during his first year with the club.

Johnson recorded 35 catches for 435 yards and three touchdowns.

Entering his eighth season, Johnson may have some suitors on the open market with some teams hoping that he'd be able to regain his form from 2010 to 2012, where he had three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons.
