Chargers' Ryan Mathews: 'If they'd let me, I'd go play this weekend'

Ryan Mathews is inching closer to a return.

The San Diego Chargers running back, who sprained his MCL during a Week 2 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, sees a light at the end of the tunnel.

"It's not like I'm out of shape," Mathews told Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego. "If they'd let me, I'd go play this weekend. So I'm just waiting for where they're telling me (I stand). I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing. I'm getting better each day and getting faster, doing my job."

Mathews tried to shed the frequent fumbler/injury prone tag last season, racking up 1,255 yards and six touchdowns while appearing in all 16 games.

With Donald Brown still out with a concussion and Branden Oliver only able to muster 36 yards on 13 carries against the Denver Broncos on Thursday, Mathews' return can't come soon enough.

"I'm just going (to) keep doing my treatment this week, come back on Monday, and see what they say," he said.
