Report: Chargers' Woodhead may require season-ending surgery on fractured fibula

Running back Danny Woodhead suffered a severe high ankle sprain and a fractured fibula during the San Diego Chargers Week 3 win over the Buffalo Bills, according to Fox Sports' Alex Marvez.

Woodhead, who was carted off the field during the first quarter, rushed for a single yard on one carry before exiting the game.

"You hate it for him first," Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said following the game (via UT San Diego). "Obviously, it's going to hurt us. But you hate it for him. He'll get through it. It's tough, I know, early like this to get hurt like that. We'll miss him, but guys will step up. You don't want anybody to get hurt. We'd be disappointed if anybody got hurt. But it just adds to the fact that you know a guy who loves it that much, cares about it that much, and goes down on his first snap."

The loss of Woodhead could be devastating for a Chargers' backfield that is already missing featured back Ryan Mathews, who is expected to miss at least a month with a sprained MCL.
