Steelers' Dick LeBeau calls Cam Newton 'the quintessential modern quarterback'

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau had high praise for Carolina quarterback Cam Newton ahead of the Steelers-Panthers matchup on Sunday.

LeBeau has seen his fair share of quarterbacks over his 56 years in the NFL, as he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a defensive back for the Lions. The 77-year-old coach has been with the Steelers since 2004.

“He’s the quintessential modern quarterback,” LeBeau said to Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Saturday.

"He’s a special athlete. He makes them tick. He can keep plays alive. He’s a much better passer than people give him credit for. He can do it all. He’s a big guy. We’ll have to play well to keep this offense in check.”

Newton has led the Panthers to a 2-0 start, and they have a chance to move to 3-0 for the first time since 2003 with a win against the Steelers.
