Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick says he's been released by the Tennessee Titans, who signed Charlie Whitehurst on Thursday to back up Jake Locker.

Fitzpatrick told The Associated Press on Friday, ''You can say I've been released, yes.''

Fitzpatrick signed a two-year contract with the Titans last March. He started nine games for the Titans last season and went 217 of 350 for 2,454 yards with 14 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. The 31-year-old Fitzpatrick has thrown for 16,790 yards, 106 touchdowns and 93 interceptions in 85 career games.

Whitehurst, also 31, has gone 84 of 155 for 805 yards passing with four interceptions and three touchdown passes in 13 NFL games. Whitehurst spent the last two seasons in San Diego, where Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt was offensive coordinator last year.

Ryan Fitzpatrick has agreed to terms with the Houston Texans, according to Ed Werder of ESPN.

Fitzpatrick was released by the Tennessee Titans last week after serving as the backup in 2013. However, he did end up starting nine games for an injured Jake Locker.

This could mean the end for Matt Schaub's time with the Texans. Houston has reportedly been shopping Schaub with the expectation they would draft a pivot for the future in May.

With Fitzpatrick being brought in, it would give them some insurance with a veteran on their roster for 2014.

Report: QB Fitzpatrick to meet with the Texans

Free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick is set to meet with the Houston Texans on Thursday, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.

Fitzpatrick was released by the Tennessee Titans on March 14 and would likely serve as the back-up to whatever quarterback the Texans presumably pick in May's draft.

The Texans still have three quarterbacks on the roster from last season, so they will likely cut or trade one of Matt Schaub, T.J. Yates or Case Keenum in the near future to make room for another quarterback via the draft or free agency.

McClain also notes that general manager Rick Smith and head coach Bill O’Brien have already attended pro days for Teddy Bridgewater and Blake Bortles and plan to check-out Johnny Manziel’s pro day next week.

Fitzpatrick started nine games for the Titans last season, registering 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with a 3-6 record.
