Jerry Jones: DeMarcus Ware not guaranteed to be a Cowboy next season

DeMarcus Ware has been a prominent fixture on the Dallas Cowboys defense ever since he was taken 11th overall in the 2005 NFL draft. However, that may not be the case come next season.

Ware is currently scheduled to count $16 million against the Cowboys salary cap in 2014. That's a huge chunk of your cap to give to a guy who recorded a career-low six sacks in 13 games last season.

Prior to last year, Ware had been as consistent a defensive player as you could find in the NFL. From 2006-2012, Ware averaged nearly 15 sacks while recording at least 11 every season. He was named to the Pro Bowl each year and was named NFC defensive player of the year in 2008.

In 2013 though, Ware was moved from outside linebacker to defensive end in the Cowboys' new 3-4 scheme. Injuries slowed him, but it was without a doubt the worst season of his career. With the Cowboys likely to stick with the same scheme, it may make sense to move on from Ware and allow him to find a system that better suits his talents.
