Report: Lions to hire Jim Caldwell as head coach

The Detroit Lions will hire Jim Caldwell as their new head coach, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Caldwell emerged as the Lions' preferred candidate after the Tennessee Titans hired former San Diego Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt Monday.

Prior to joining the Baltimore Ravens as offensive coordinator late in the 2012 season, Caldwell served as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2009 to 2011, taking the team to a Super Bowl. He was fired after the Colts' 2-14 season in 2011.

Caldwell's former boss in Indianapolis, Tony Dungy, is rumored to have strongly urged the Lions to hire Caldwell.
