Report: NFL to adopt proposal for ejections, suspensions on illegal hits

The NFL will adopt a proposal to eject or suspend players who commit some types of illegal hits without a vote, The Washington Post's Mark Maske reports.

The NFL's competition committee recommended the rule. It's not entirely clear why no vote will be held.

The competition committee argued that the NFL's system of issuing fines for illegal hits wasn't enough of a deterrent, according to Maske.

The proposal, which has been likened to college football's targeting rule, may merely expand the current authority of game officials, who already have the discretion to eject players for head shots but rarely exercise the power.
