Racquel Smith, the widow of former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, testified Tuesday against Cardell Hayes, who is accused of killing the former Super Bowl champion.

Racquel spoke directly to Hayes during portions of her testimony. Will was shot eight times, while Racquel was shot in both legs during the April 9 incident.

"My worst nightmare happened. For no reason. He didn't have to do that to my baby," Racquel said, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett.

"And you know it! Or to me. I didn't do you anything," she added, while speaking to Hayes.

Racquel said she grew fearful when she saw the look in the eyes of Hayes and his friend, Kevin O'Neal.

"I saw it in everyone's eyes. I'm a mother first. I'm trying to stop the whole situation because I'm scared. It didn't have to go where it went. Everyone on that scene knew it did not have to go that route," Racquel said.

Racquel also rebuked the notion that she'd evoke sympathy from the jury.

"I don't want sympathy. I want justice."
