4 players who found a perfect home in the 1st round

Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Matt Williamson is a former scout for the Cleveland Browns and spent the last 10 years at ESPN as a scout and co-host of "The Football Today Podcast."

The opening round of the 2016 NFL Draft is in the books and there were some teams that reached for need and several teams that had an unexpected player fall in their lap.

While every team is happy with their pick, at least on the surface, several fits stand out above the rest.

As you will see, a few playoff caliber teams got a nice boost with their first draft selection.

Karl Joseph, S, Raiders

Few thought of Joseph as a top half of the first round type of prospect. But after taking a step back and analyzing the situation, the only real weakness on him is his current injury status. And as I often say, we in the media should never pretend to be doctors.

Obviously, the Raiders’ medical staff isn't concerned, which most likely means that most medical staffs around the league were not concerned.

Joseph is just an exceptional, all-around, highly productive football player with great leadership traits and a ton of career starts under his belt at West Virginia. No one is saying that he is the next Charles Woodson, but the Raiders should be able to align him in several spots in the defensive formation and, when paired with Reggie Nelson, he should be a clear overall upgrade at safety from 2015.

While the game has changed, the late great Al Davis would very much approve of the physical nastiness Joseph brings to the Raiders' secondary. It might not be long before he is Oakland's new leader on this side of the ball.

Laquon Treadwell, WR, Vikings

This one is just perfect. While Norv Turner's system has historically featured a speed receiver on the outside and plenty of deep passing, that isn't what Teddy Bridgewater does well.

The knock on Treadwell is his speed, but he also played injured. So he might play faster next year than he did in 2015. Even then, Treadwell will never be a speed merchant. But what he does do extremely well is get off the line of scrimmage, use his strong body and power to get in position to play the football, and play the game with an edge.

Treadwell is just the kind of wideout that Bridgewater needs and has a mentality that Mike Zimmer is sure to love. Treadwell is also a great blocker and could spring Adrian Peterson on a few long runs.

Treadwell will lead the Vikings in receptions, yardage, and touchdowns in 2016 and could challenge Ezekiel Elliott for Rookie of the Year honors. Minnesota got the fewest touchdown receptions from the wide receiver position of any team in the league last year. This pick will change that in a hurry.

Kenny Clark, DT, Packers

With Myles Jack falling like a stone, the Packers, with a major need for a three-down linebacker, looked like a potential spot to end the UCLA standout's slide. But instead, Green Bay picked Jack's teammate Clark, which also fills a major need.

Maybe more than any team in the NFL, Green Bay plays with a lot of two down-linemen sets on defense. And in those sets, they are looking for big-bodied guys in the mold of B.J. Raji. Well, Raji retired and the interior of the Packers' defense needed attention at defensive tackle as well as at linebacker.

Adding Clark should provide a push on passing plays, but more importantly, protection for Green Bay's second-level defenders against the run. While it is a bit of a shock that Clark went ahead of fellow defensive tackles Jarran Reed, Andrew Billings and A'Shawn Robinson, Clark's mentality and skill set fit exactly what the Packers need from the position.

His addition should help Green Bay reduce the unacceptable 4.5 yards per rush they allowed in 2015.

Robert Nkemdiche, DT, Cardinals

Another Ole Miss guy on this list and a third first-round player from that program that fell more than most expected, talent was never the question for Nkemdiche.

His tape is inconsistent, but it is also jaw dropping at times. Just go watch his game this year against Alabama and you will understand why he was considered the top recruit in the country coming out of high school.

The Cardinals are in it to win it this year and should get instant impact from Nkemdiche as well as Chandler Jones, who they traded for pre-draft. With these two, they may not have to blitz as often as they have the past two seasons and can align Nkemdiche all over their defensive front. Calais Campbell is already in place. Getting these three blocked will prove very difficult.

This team is an excellent, stable organization with a head coach that relates very well to players. This is the perfect landing spot for Nkemdiche.

Other Great Fits

  • Jack Conklin, OT, Titans
  • Sheldon Rankins, DT, Saints
  • Ryan Kelly, C, Colts
