Joe Johnson: 'I never get calls'
Aside from expletives hurled by executives and blown leads, the biggest storyline in the Toronto Raptors vs Brooklyn Nets playoff series has been complaints about officiating.
Coaches on both sides have sent messages through the media to voice their dissatisfaction, and at shootaround on Friday some of the players got involved as well.
Just one day after Nets coach Jason Kidd praised Joe Johnson for not complaining about not getting calls, Johnson complained about not getting calls.
"I never get calls, man," Johnson said to the media at shootaround. "It doesn't bother me, though. I just try to play through it. At the end of the day, playing to the refs is not gonna make it any easier."
Asked about possibly embellishing contact to draw more attention, Johnson downplayed his acting chops.
"I'm not that good at it," Johnson replied. "I'm not a flopper. I can't sell it, I guess. I just try to be aggressive and just try to take whatever the defense presents to us as a team. We can't worry about the calls. We can't worry about getting calls. We can't complain to the referees. We've just got to play through it."
Johnson has been sent to the line 27 times through five games, compared to 61 trips for Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan, and 33 for Kyle Lowry.
