Report: Rams 'strongly considering' drafting a QB

Bob Donnan / USA TODAY Sports

As the NFL draft approaches (though not quickly enough for fans used to the annual spectacle being held in mid-April), the St. Louis Rams are reportedly turning their attention toward the top passers in this year's class.

Though the Rams have Sam Bradford on their roster - and the team's coaching staff has expressed strong support of him - Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the team is "strongly considering" drafting a quarterback in May.

Thomas identifies numerous quarterbacks, including Derek Carr, Aaron Murray, AJ McCarron and Zach Mettenberger, as possibilities for the Rams. Curiously, he doesn't include the consensus top three prospects at the position, Teddy Bridgewater, Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel, as likely future Rams.

The Rams own the No. 2 and No. 13 overall selections in the draft and will surely have the opportunity to draft a premier passing prospect. For now, it appears the team is zeroing in on a mid-round prospect.

Bradford has two years remaining on his contract, but he's largely been a disappointment since the Rams made him the No. 1 overall pick in 2010. He carries additional concerns in 2014, as he's coming off a torn ACL.

Cutting Bradford would save the Rams $10.4 million in salary, but would trigger $7.2 million in dead salary cap money spread over two years.
