Report: Twins claim Sam Fuld off waivers from A's

by Apr 20, 1:53 PM

After being designated for assignment by the Oakland A's last Saturday, outfielder Sam Fuld has reportedly been claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins.

While Fuld doesn't offer much offensive production (he hit just .199 and had a .537 OPS in 200 plate appearances last season) he adds value off the bench as a versatile fielder and a strong baserunner.

The diminutive utility man has also managed to endear himself to fans and teammates at every stop with his attitude, professionalism, and scrappy play.

As some have pointed out, he should be a perfect fit in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Twins claimed outfielder Sam Fuld from the Oakland Athletics on Sunday in an effort to bolster outfield production. The 32-year-old is expected to join the team Tuesday night.

To make room on the 40-man and 25-man rosters, Minnesota designated Darin Mastroianni for assignment. Since arriving in town from Triple-A, the outfielder went 0-for-11 with five strikeouts in seven games.

"He can play all the outfield positions, and he can steal a base," assistant general manager Rob Antony said via "He puts together pretty good at-bats. We got a firsthand look at him when Oakland was in town last week. He's a gamer, a guy who comes to play every day. Hopefully, he can add a little life to the offense."

Antony said the organization isn't "inked in" to Aaron Hicks in center field for the rest of the season, and the assistant GM has discussed the possibility of a platoon situation in center for Hicks and Fuld with manager Ron Gardenhire.

Athletics designate Fuld for assignment, activate Gentry

by Apr 12, 4:45 PM

The Oakland Athletics designated outfielder Sam Fuld for assignment Saturday to make room for Craig Gentry's return from the 15-day disabled list.

Fuld's contract with the team allows him to opt-out and elect free agency if he's not on the 25-man roster on June 1.

The 32-year old is .200/.273/.433 in 33 plate appearances with the A's this season.

In demoting Fuld, Oakland is keeping first baseman Daric Barton and outfielder Josh Reddick (who is just .103/.161/.103 in 31 PAs) on the active roster.
