Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is scheduled to undergo an ankle procedure Wednesday and will be out of commission for the next four months, the team announced Tuesday.

"The ankle was sore after the San Francisco game and we wanted to see if rest would calm it down, but it is still bothering him and the decision was made to address it," Panthers head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion said in a statement, via Pro Football Talk.

The four-month recovery period will likely force Newton to miss the entirety of the Panthers' offseason program, but he is expected back on the field in time for training camp.
