Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf dished out one of the hardest hits in Tuesday night's game versus the San Jose Sharks. Unfortunetly for Phaneuf and the Leafs, it was administered to his teammate James van Riemsdyk. Phaneuf attempted to line up Patrick Marleau for a big open ice hit, but the result was poor van Riemsdyk taking the impact.

Phaneuf has earned a reputation as one of the hardest hitters in the NHL. On occassion, he's shown a knack for laying out his teammates. Here is Dion Phaneuf's history of hitting teammates.

Phaneuf levels JVR

Everything about this hit says phone hearing for Phaneuf. He appears to leave his feet and the principle point of contact is the head. Had Phaneuf connected with Marleau rather than his teammate van Riemsdyk, then perhaps he'd be scheduled for discussion with the Department of Player Safety.

Phaneuf collides with Mike Komisarek in warm-up

There were probably more than a handful of Maple Leafs fans who enjoyed watching their captain send Komisarek to the ice. These two appear to make up shortly after while discussing the physics involved in the impact.

You'll have to forgive Phaneuf on this one, as he must have thought sudden death meant the first team to notch a casualty would win. Nathan Horton bites it as Phaneuf takes himself out of the play. It's not a hit on teammate per se, but Phaneuf impedes Kessel, who stood as good a chance as anyone to catch up to the play.
