Early in the third period of a blowout between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the San Jose Sharks, Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf attempted to catch Sharks forward Patrick Marleau with a big open ice hit. Unfortunately for Phaneuf and the Maple Leafs, the hard-hitting defender missed and tagged his teammate James van Riemsdyk up high instead.
Here's the slapstick incident:
While the highlight is funny, it's significantly less amusing that van Riemsdyk appeared to be shaken up on the play. The high-scoring power forward - who has a history of concussion issues - left the ice and headed immediately down the tunnel after the hit. After a brief absence, van Riemsdyk ultimately returned before the end of the third period.
There's still no word on whether or not Phaneuf will face a telephone hearing later this week.
