Report: Latvians facing disqualification from Olympics in light of second failed drug test

After losing to Canada by the slimmest of margins in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Latvia could have its eight-place finish wiped off the records after a second player is suspected to have tested positive for a banned substance, according to Jame Mirtle of the Globe and Mail.

Under International Olympic Committee rules, teams aren’t punished unless more than one player commits an anti-doping rule violation. That’s why Nicklas Backstrom’s disqualification for use of allergy medication hasn’t affected Sweden’s silver medal.

The IOC continues to investigate the second case of suspected doping, and may subject the entire team to "target testing" while subsequently withholding funding from the Latvian Olympic Committee.
