Engelland was assessed a match penalty on the play, and will likely face a disciplinary hearing for a rather blatant violation of rule 48. Abdelkader meanwhile was helped down the tunnel by Red Wings trainers...

Bylsma surprised by in-person hearing for Penguins D Engelland

Dec 18, 12:17 PM

Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland will learn his fate at an in-person hearing Wednesday for his hit to the head of Red Wings forward Justin Abdelkader, but coach Dan Bylsma doesn't see the need for a hearing at all.

Bylsma believes the main motivation behind the hearing is Engelland's history - he was suspended three games in 2011 for a high hit on Marcus Kruger - but he says the hit was a legal hockey play.

"Deryk and Justin are going for a puck, both going stick-on-puck, and Justin's leaning into the play," Bylsma told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review Monday. "I think Deryk's intention is to go stick-on-puck, and (he is) really not looking for too much physical contact. (He is) protecting himself going into that hit."

An in-person hearing allows for a suspension of more than five games. The league recently suspended Bruins forward Shawn Thornton 15 games for an incident and Thornton is set to appeal the ruling Friday. The Penguins could pursue a similar course of action if Engelland's suspension is similarly harsh.
