Milan tries to build momentum against Fiorentina

Milan, Italy (SportsNetwork.com) - AC Milan will attempt to turn around a dismal season in Serie A when the club hosts Fiorentina on Saturday at the San Siro.

With just 12 points from its first 10 games Milan has already fallen 18 points back of leaders Roma, pretty much erasing any hopes of a title at this early stage of the campaign.

Massimiliano Allegri's side will now focus on attempting to claw its way back into contention for a Champions League spot, but the team faces a steep climb.

Milan is already 13 points adrift of third-place Juventus, and with just two wins from its last nine games in all competitions, the club must begin to dig itself out of the hole its has created.

That process begins on Saturday with Fiorentina, a side that resides in sixth place and is coming off of a 2-1 home defeat to Napoli on Wednesday.

Milan was held to a 1-1 draw by Lazio on Wednesday after conceding a 72nd- minute equalizer Mickael Ciani, but Allegri still found reasons for optimism after the contest.

"We have to keep working and putting in this sort of performance," Allegri told Sky Sport Italia.

"The side played well in terms of technique and defending, but we lost our unity a little after the equalizer and allowed a couple of dangerous counter- attacks."

Milan has lost its last two home games against the Viola, and the team will be without defenders Daniele Bonera and Matias Silvestre through injury, while fellow defender Philippe Mexes is still serving a suspension.

Roma extended its winning streak to 10 successive matches to start the season on Thursday with a 1-0 victory against Chievo, and the club will hope to continue that streak on Sunday at Torino.

Napoli sits five points back of Roma and has won four of its last five matches ahead of a home contest against Catania on Saturday, while Juventus is level with Napoli on 25 points and will invade Parma.

Hellas Verona has collected four wins from its last five matches and the team hosts Cagliari, Livorno entertains Atalanta, Lazio takes on Genoa, Sassuolo travels to Sampdoria, Inter Milan visits Udinese and Bologna meets up with Chievo.
