OTT at ANA: GIF - Hiller really sells glove save

by Oct 13, 10:41 PM

Late in the third period of Anaheim's 4-1 blowout win over the Ottawa Senators, Senators defenseman Erik Karlsson got a ten bell scoring chance in the Anaheim slot.

Karlsson uncorked a wrister far side on Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller, which Hiller managed to snare. Then Hiller may have hot-dogged the save a bit (to say the least). Check it out:

When you look as good as Hiller did in throwback threads on Sunday evening, it can't hurt to go that extra mile and try to look really, really good.

ANA 4, OTT 1: Hiller raves about throwback jerseys

by Oct 13, 10:59 PM

Like the rest of the hockey world, Jonas Hiller was a big fan of the 90's throwback sweaters the Anaheim Ducks wore on Sunday.

From Mayor's Manor blogger John Hoven:

ANA 4, OTT 1: Ducks Mighty in form and appearance in win over Senators

by Oct 13, 10:56 PM

On Sunday night, the Anaheim Ducks officially celebrated the franchise's 20th year of existence.

Playing the team they defeated in the 2007 Stanley Cup Final and sporting throwback 90's threads, the Ducks put on a clinic, pummeling the Senators mercilessly in a 4-1 victory.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Based on their performance on Tuesday night, the Ducks should never wear the orange and black relative monstrosities they wear regularly. Green and aubergine only.
  • The Ducks out-shot the Senators 56 to 31 overall and 40 to 28 at even-strength. To put into context how badly the Senators were outshot: the Ducks scored four goals and Senators goaltenders still combined to post a .929 save percentage.
  • Ducks rookie defenseman Hampus Lindholm had his first NHL point in the contest, and also his second.
  • Francois Beachemin was on the ice for every Anaheim goal for on Sunday night, while Erik Karlsson was on the ice for three of Anaheim's goals against.
  • Playing back-to-back games in California (against the Sharks and the Ducks) the Senators surrendered 106 shots against on Saturday and Sunday...

Relive all the action with the storyline below.

OTT at ANA: PHOTO - Hiller looks great in throwback mask, jersey

by Oct 13, 9:57 PM

The Anaheim Ducks are wearing 90's throwback jerseys for Sunday night's 20th anniversary game against the Ottawa Senators.

Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller designed a special mask for the occasion, one which received due attention before the game:

The mask is slick, the jersey looks great. So unsurprisingly if you put it all together, you've got one sweet get up:

Don't go back to the orange and black Anaheim: roll with the green and aubergine.

OTT at ANA: Ducks chase Anderson, pepper Senators with shots

by Oct 13, 9:48 PM

Through 40 minutes of Sunday night's game between the Anaheim Ducks and the Ottawa Senators, the Ducks have peppered the Senators with 45 shots on goal.

In the process of averaging more than a shot per minute of play, the Ducks have chased Senators goaltender Craig Anderson and beaten his backup Robin Lehner twice (in 36 tries). The Ducks lead the Senators 4-1, and it could be worse for Ottawa frankly.

If the Ducks can keep this up, they'll become just the third team in a generation to record 60 shots on goal in regulation during the regular season:

OTT at ANA: VIDEO - Hampus Lindholm sets up Corey Perry

by Oct 13, 9:25 PM

19-year-old Anaheim Ducks rookie and 2012 first round pick Hampus Lindholm is playing in only his third NHL game on Sunday night against the Ottawa Senators. But you wouldn't know it to watch him play.

The calm, composed, puck-moving defenseman recorded his first NHL point on Sunday, an assist on Ryan Getzlaf's mucky goal. His second NHL point, another primary assist, was somewhat more sightly.

OTT at ANA: VIDEO - Bobby Ryan scores lovely goal against former club

by Oct 13, 8:57 PM

Senators forwards Bobby Ryan and Kyle Turris aren't too impressed with the "Mighty Ducks" sweaters Anaheim is wearing for Sunday night's game.

The Anaheim Ducks pummeled Ottawa in the first period on Sunday night. In fact, the Ducks set a franchise record by recording 24 shots in the opening twenty minutes. However, the Senators managed to keep the game close, scoring a highlight reel goal against the grain late in the frame.

Check out the feed from Turris to Ryan:

OTT at ANA: Inspired by throwback sweaters, Ducks strike early

by Oct 13, 8:40 PM

It took less than 30 seconds for the players on the Anaheim Ducks to let management know how fond they are of their new throwback jerseys.

Corey Perry opened the scoring for Anaheim extremely early in the first period, capitalizing on some soft defensive coverage from the Ottawa Senators to beat Craig Anderson cleanly from the slot:

Ryan Getzlaf would add a second goal for the Ducks a few minutes later, giving the Anaheim "Mighty" Ducks a two goal lead over Ottawa in the first period.

OTT at ANA: PHOTO - Ducks originals meet, recall mascot bonfire

by Oct 13, 7:49 PM

Some members of the original Anaheim Mighty Ducks are in Anaheim on Sunday to take part in the club's 20th anniversary festivities.

Here's a photo of the Ducks alumni, led by Stu Grimson:

The incident Grimson is referencing happened in 2006, when the Ducks mascot "Wild Wing" fell while performing a pregame stunt over an open torch:

OTT at ANA: PHOTO - Ducks show-off retro jerseys in dressing room

by Oct 13, 5:21 PM

The Anaheim Ducks are wearing Mighty Ducks throwback sweaters for their game against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night. The team's official accounted tweeted out a photo of those sweet, sweet sweaters adorning the Ducks dressing room.

Needless to say the sweaters fit the bill:

The sweaters themselves may be sightly, but we'd imagine the room itself smells fowl.

OTT at ANA: 3 things you need to know

by Oct 13, 1:37 PM

Second overall pick in the 2005 draft Bobby Ryan makes his return to Anaheim after being traded to Ottawa in July. The Sunday evening tilt will be the fifth of a six game road trip for the Senators (1-1-2) to start the season and the second of a back-to-back. Anaheim (3-1-0) are winners of three straight and haven't played since laying a 6-0 drubbing on the New York Rangers Thursday.

Ryan's return

Four 30-plus goal scoring campaigns in the last five seasons is pretty impressive, no wonder the Senators were excited to acquire Ryan. The 26-year-old had spent his entire career in Anaheim, scoring 147 goals in 378 games, while missing only three games in the last four seasons. He's got a pair of goals and assists in four games for the Sens so far.  Not to be out done, Jakob Silfverberg, one of the key parts who came back to Anaheim in the trade, has four goals in as many games.

Retro jersey night, retro jersey night!

Yep, that's right, the Ducks are wearing their purple Mighty Ducks inspired throwbacks for the first time this season. The team is running the promotion in honor of their 20-year anniversary. In addition to the purple jerseys, the team will also be selling 93-cent popcorn and playing 90's music. Former Ducks' Bobby Dollas, Stu Grimson, Terry Yake along with everyone's favorite Guy Hebert will be in attendance.

Anaheim's special teams have been a lame duck

Hopefully the new jersey's will breath some life into Anaheim's abominable special teams. The Ducks are 1-for-15 with the main advantage, good for last place in the NHL at 6.7%. If that wasn't bad enough, the team is just as terrible on the penalty kill, having allowed five goals on 13 opportunities, good for 61.5%. Quack.
