The Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic games are just about six months away, and the torch relay from Greece to Sochi will reportedly feature Russian NHL star Alex Ovechkin.

It is a custom to accompany the torch from Greece to the Olympic destination, but Ovechkin will get the torch on the first leg of its journey in Greece.

Dmitry Chernyshenko, the President of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Organizing Committee, hinted Ovechkin may be the first Russian to carry the torch but would not divulge any details.

by Sep 9, 4:52 PM

Alex Ovechkin has been invited to be the first Russian to hold the Olympic torch. This news was confirmed on Monday by Washington Capitals head coach Adam Oates, as per Katie Carrera of the Washington Post.

Ovechkin will be allowed to participate in the relay, but only if there's a quick turnaround in regards to the travel schedule.

No word yet on whether he will actually run with the torch, or if he'll get to ride in the back of a pickup truck like Wayne Gretzky.
