Report: Virginia Tech expected to name Justin Fuente head coach

Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

Virginia Tech is expected to name Memphis' Justin Fuente as its next head coach, according to Brett McMurphy of ESPN.

Fuente will replace Frank Beamer, who announced earlier this year that 2015 would be his last season with the Hokies. Defensive coordinator Bud Foster and running backs coach Shane Beamer will stay with the staff, according to McMurphy.

It remains to be seen when Fuente will begin the role, as Memphis is heading to a bowl game and the Hokies could be bowl eligible with a win Saturday.

Fuente has done an excellent job turning the Tigers' program around after joining the school in 2012. Memphis finished 10-3 last season and is out to a 9-3 record in 2015. The Tigers will be looking to win their second consecutive bowl game after capturing the Miami Beach Bowl last season.

As much success as Fuente has enjoyed recently, it won't be easy filling Beamer's shoes. After becoming the head coach in 1987, Beamer built the Hokies into a respected national program and has guided Virginia Tech to 22 straight bowl games.
