4-star recruit Brandon Johnson, son of former MLB player, commits to Tennessee

Tennessee has landed a heavily recruited four-star wide receiver with ties to big-league baseball.

Brandon Johnson, a class of 2016 recruit, announced Wednesday he's committed to the Volunteers, according to Ryan Bartow of 247Sports.

"I just felt like the future was bright at Tennessee under (head coach) Butch Jones," Johnson said of the decision. "I also am looking forward to playing for (receivers coach) Zach Azzanni (his recruiter of record)."

Johnson is the son of former MLB catcher Charles Johnson, whose playing career stretched from 1994-2005. During that tenure, he suited up for the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Chicago White Sox, Colorado Rockies, and Tampa Bay Rays.

ESPN ranks Johnson as the country's no. 54 wide receiver in his recruiting class, as well as the 51st-best prospect in his home state of Florida.

He opted for Tennessee over offers from a who's who of top-tier college football programs, including Georgia, Clemson, Arkansas, LSU, and South Carolina.
