North Carolina's Malik Simmons reinstated following suspension

North Carolina defensive back Malik Simmons has been reinstated by the Tar Heels following last month's suspension, taking the field Monday for the first day of the team's fall camp.

Coach Larry Fedora confirmed that Simmons' indefinite suspension had been lifted, saying the program was now "waiting to see the thing play out," before making any other decisions regarding the senior, according to Kevin McGuire of NBC Sports.

Simmons was suspended from all team activities more than a week ago following his second arrest of the offseason.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Simmons was on the practice field in Chapel Hill on Monday while his name was called at the Orange County Courthouse in Hillsborough, N.C., for a first appearance following misdemeanor citations for resisting a public officer and possession of marijuana, according to Brooke Pryor of The Herald-Sun.

No one answered for Simmons, who was cited in May for marijuana possession and arrested in late July for the second offense outside a Chapel Hill bar.

According to the North Carolina online court calendar, his court date for both citations is still listed as Aug. 3.

The native of Lehigh Acres, Fla., started five of 12 games last season for the Tar Heels, recording 34 tackles, three passes broken up, and a forced fumble.
