Fifth-year tailback D.J. Morgan has retired from football to focus on track and field, according to head coach Steve Sarkisian.

The former running back turned defensive tackle said his retirement was solely from the football team and he remains optimistic about playing in the NFL someday.

"I realize I still have a lot left in me," Morgan said to the Los Angeles Times. "I haven't played in a while and I just want to get my body back."

Sarkisian informed the media following practice this week.

"We recruited D.J. out of high school," he said. "He was an elite track athlete and he wants to get healthy for that opportunity so we're wishing him the best of luck."

Morgan, who is also a hurdler, rushed for 364 yards in 83 carries with one touchdown in his USC career.
