Deion: Prospects' parents 'don't want me in their house'

Deion Sanders had some opinions about a report that revealed the head coach hasn't made off-campus contact with recruiting prospects since being hired by Colorado in December 2022.

Sanders addressed the report, published by USA Today's Brent Schrotenboer earlier this month, during his press conference on Wednesday. The Buffaloes coach said that, after a "personal survey," he believes that "parents don't want (him) in their house," according to The Athletic's David Ubben. Instead, Sanders prefers to show prospects and their families what life would be like in and around campus.

By contrast, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian has made 128 off-campus recruiting visits. Beginning in December 2022, former Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh conducted 145. But Sanders doesn't feel the need to follow a similar path, noting that his method saves the university money and saves him from answering questions about why he visited some high schools and not others.

"I have never heard one guy say I chose this college because this coach came by my crib. Have you?" Sanders said. "I can't do the things other coaches can do. You know why? I’m Coach Prime. And I didn't stutter when I said it."

Despite Sanders' unique approach, the Buffaloes have attracted some top talent. Colorado signed four ESPN 300 prospects during the 2024 recruiting cycle, including five-star offensive tackle Jordan Seaton.

While the Buffaloes have made inroads on the recruiting trail, they've also leaned heavily on acquiring talent through the transfer portal since Sanders' arrival. The Colorado coach said he doesn't often have to make home visits because the program prefers to target transfers.

Two-way star Travis Hunter and quarterback Shedeur Sanders - Deion's son - are among the most notable transfers to play under Sanders at Colorado.
