NCAA President Emmert supports 8-team playoff

Put NCAA president Mark Emmert in the corner of those who prefer an eight-team playoff in college football.

Speaking at the Learfield Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, Emmert would like all Power 5 conferences to have a spot in the college football playoff.

"I'd love to see all five of the conference champions get in the playoffs," Emmert said, according to Marc Tracy of the New York Times.

With only four berths and five major conferences, at least one conference will always be left out. In 2014 and 2016 the Big 12 did not have a team selected, while in 2015 the Pac-12 was left out.

Also, where in the first two years of the CFP only conference champions were selected, 2016 saw Ohio State picked over conference champion Penn State from the Big Ten.

Though the NCAA has no control over how the playoff or bowl system is structured, it is interesting to have the highest-ranking official in the NCAA to give his opinion over what he would prefer.

Emmert has to be happy this year though, as Washington qualified for the playoff, where he earned his Bachelor degree and was the school's president from 2004-10.
