Filing in Tennessee Title IX suit suggests drawn-out process

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Lawyers for both sides of the Title IX lawsuit filed against the University of Tennessee over its handling of sexual assault complaints believe it may not be ready to go to trial for another two years.

The two sides estimated the case should be ready for trial by May 15, 2018, in a joint proposed initial case management order filed Thursday. Lawyers for both sides indicated in the filing that they would expect a trial to last about three to four weeks.

U.S. District Judge Aleta Trauger hasn't set a trial date yet.

The federal lawsuit, filed February in Nashville, alleges the school has violated Title IX policies and created a "hostile sexual environment" through a policy of indifference toward assaults by athletes. Eight unidentified women are listed as plaintiffs.
