'Renaissance man' Matt Stainbrook joins Xavier's track team

Xavier's Matt Stainbrook has not given up on sports just yet.

The 6-foot-10 center is trying his hand at discus and shot put in the Big East Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Villanova, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer's Shannon Russell.

"I like to do different things. I'm a Renaissance man," Stainbrook said. "Especially because it keeps me in shape, keeps me busy."

Finishing the basketball season averaging 12.3 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game, Stainbrook helped to lead his team to the Sweet Sixteen this year, but Xavier ultimately fell to Arizona 68-60.

Stainbrook placed fifth in shot put (12.11 meters) and 10th in discus (29.66 meters) at a meet at Purdue.

Stainbrook will still be ready for playing basketball at the professional level though, as he has hired Pro Partner Sports Management agents and is looking to train in either Florida or Boston after he is finished at Xavier.

And if he does not score a lucky invite to the NBA Draft Combine, "I've heard I'll probably get eight to 12 workouts with NBA teams so I'll get a chance to sort of prove myself," Stainbrook explained.

"And from there it's making a summer league team. If you do that, you give yourself a shot to possibly get invited to a training camp. It's always one step after another."
