Calipari is done with platoon system: 'Last season was an absolute outlier'

In the wake of a near-perfect season, John Calipari is already looking ahead to next year, and one thing that won't be part of the Kentucky coach's plans is a platoon system.

Calipari used a platoon during the 2014-15 season, which saw the emergence of two separate five-man units and a rotation that went 10-deep for a large chunk of the season.

But the latest version of the Wildcats was a special case.

"If you ask me if I'm ever going to platoon again, my answer is NO," Calipari wrote in a column on his website.

Kentucky, whose bid for an undefeated season came to an end with a Final Four loss to Wisconsin, lost seven players to the NBA Draft.

"Last season was an absolute outlier," Calipari wrote. "It's just not the way I like to coach. I would rather play seven or eight guys because I believe that gives us the best chance to win. I think we wrote the book on platooning this year, but I hope we stick it on the shelf and never have to use it again."

Calipari landed the No. 2 recruiting class going into next season, but that won't affect his decision regarding platooning.

"I think how you will see us playing going forward will be closer to how we have always played. That won't be platooning," the 2012 national championship-winning coach wrote.
