Tennessee hires Rick Barnes as new head coach

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Rick Barnes didn't stay unemployed for long.

Tennessee has hired the former Texas coach to serve the same role.

Barnes and the Longhorns mutually agreed to part ways Sunday.

The Volunteers fired Donnie Tyndall after a single season with the team. He was let go after the NCAA revealed his upcoming severe punishment for infractions committed while at Southern Miss.

Barnes, a four-time winner of the Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, had a record of 402-180 over 17 seasons with the Longhorns, making the NCAA tournament 16 times.

In 2014, Texas had a 20-14 record, which concluded with a 56-48 loss to Butler in their tournament opener.

Tennessee finished the year with a 16-16 record.
