Ohio State survives Purdue scare

Jason Mowry / USA TODAY Sports

Ohio State hung on for a tough 65-61 victory over Purdue in Columbus on Sunday.

Star guard D'Angelo Russell finished with 28 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals to lead the Buckeyes to their third consecutive victory.

Ohio State handled the Boilermakers early on until a 3-pointer from Vince Edwards with less than eight minutes left in the first half pushed Purdue into the lead and on a victory run. They entered the second frame with a 12-point edge.

The Buckeyes, however, were determined not to go quietly. Sam Thompson put up 14 points, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block to help his team catch up to Purdue in a high-energy second half. Guard Kam Williams sunk a clutch pair of free throws with four seconds left in the game to widen the gap.

Purdue center A.J. Hammons tallied 16 points, six rebounds, one steal and three blocks in an effort to hold onto the Boilermakers' lead. Rapheal Davis and Dakota Mathias scored 15 and 10 points respectively, but couldn't avoid Ohio State snapping Purdue's four-game victory march.

Ohio State, now 10-6 in the Big Ten, heads to Penn State on March 3.
