Charles Mitchell granted waiver, will be eligible for Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech won't have to wait a season before having Charles Mitchell in the lineup after securing the junior transfer from Maryland this summer.

On Friday, Mitchell was granted a waiver by the NCAA, making him eligible for the Yellow Jackets immediately. The news was first reported by ESPN, who explains the family situation that likely afforded Mitchell the waiver:

The 6-foot-8 Mitchell, a native of Marietta, Georgia, was granted the waiver to be closer to his family. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution had reported earlier in the summer he wanted to be near his ailing grandmother.

Last season with the Terrapins, Mitchell averaged 6.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 18.8 minutes, shooting 51.7 percent from the floor. He should figure in to Georgia Tech's frontcourt rotation in an appreciable way, perhaps even earning the starting job at power forward.
