Report: Ref receives death threats from Kentucky fans after loss to North Carolina

Nelson Chenault / USA TODAY Sports

After North Carolina took down Kentucky in the final seconds of the Elite Eight, Wildcats fans took to Facebook and the phone to attack referee John Higgins, after many felt he made incorrect calls that cost Kentucky the game.

Some of those calls to both his work and unlisted home number included death threats, which had Higgins meet with law enforcement officials for more than two hours, according to Jeff Goodman and Dana O'Neil of ESPN.

Higgins' Facebook page for his roofing company was bombarded by Wildcats supporters who gave Higgins negative reviews and poor star ratings.

However, there were some fans who stood up for the troubled official.

Higgins had no comment on the matter, but still plans to officiate in the Final Four in Phoenix, sources told Goodman and O'Neil.
