No. 1 recruit Michael Porter Jr. asks Washington for release

Gary A. Vasquez-US PRESSWIRE

Michael Porter Jr., the nation's No. 1 overall recruit and current Washington commit, has asked the Huskies to release him from his National Letter of Intent, he told reporters via teleconference Wednesday.

The Nathan Hale High School star told Jason Jordan of USA TODAY Sports he'll still consider going to Washington as he reopens his recruitment, along with Virginia, Oklahoma, and Missouri.

The Seattle native was expected to be the crown jewel of another strong recruiting class for Lorenzo Romar, but the Huskies recently axed the longtime coach and hired former Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins to replace him.

Porter also confirmed on the teleconference that his father, who had been an assistant on Romar's staff, has an offer to join Missouri as an assistant coach but hasn't yet accepted it.

Porter had been committed to Washington since July 2016.
