Both Michigan State and Duke condemned an insensitive sign shown in the crowd during their matchup Tuesday.

A sign, held by a fan, shown during the game read: "The water tastes better in North Carolina,"

Both schools sent out statements Wednesday voicing their strong opposition to the sign, according to Myron Medcalf of ESPN.

"The sign was disgusting and a slam to those who are suffering in our state," Michigan State wrote in a statement. "We understand the actions of an individual student do not reflect the beliefs of Duke University or its Athletic Department."

Michigan state officials are facing charges after an investigation discovered high levels of lead and corrosion in the Flint water supply.

"Everyone in our program thinks the sign was reprehensible and disgusting," Duke spokesman Cory Walton said. "That's 100 percent not in line with the values of our program. Michigan State officials said the sign referenced a difficult situation for people throughout their state."
