Calipari: Kentucky will try to score 'in 3 seconds'

A quick tempo is nothing new to Kentucky, but head coach John Calipari wants to take it up a notch this season.

When asked Thursday about the playing style for his 2016-17 Wildcats, Calipari said he expects to see a squad that plays suffocating defense and turns it into offense instantly.

"I would say we will be a mauling, helping, rotating, shot-blocking team, probably pick up at half-court, because we can. On offense, a team that tries to score in three seconds, and if not, a team that tries to attack the paint," the 57-year-old told reporters during Kentucky's media day.

"In February, I'm going to be disappointed if we're not the best defensive team," he added.

Kentucky enters the season once again loaded with elite athletes, thanks to another blockbuster recruiting class and a couple of key returning players.

Even if Kentucky goes all the way this year, though, Calipari won't be satisfied if his program doesn't continue producing NBA draft picks.

"I would enjoy the fact that I had a team that won a national title, but I would be disappointed that none of the kids got drafted, because that's not how it's supposed to work," he said.

Kentucky tips off the season Nov. 11 versus Stephen F. Austin.
