NCAA looking to tweak timeout rules

Kim Klement / USA TODAY Sports

The NCAA's basketball rules committee is looking to change the rules pertaining to calling timeouts - again.

Under the proposed change, coaches would receive the ability to call timeouts from the sidelines while their teams are inbounding the ball, according to Myron Medcalf of ESPN. The change is designed to help teams avoid five-second violations, especially down the stretch of games.

Last year, the NCAA implemented a rule that prevented coaches from calling timeouts in any live-ball situation, instead forcing a player on the floor to make the call. That rule, which received generally negative reviews, was partly intended to help officials determine which team called a timeout during loose-ball scrambles.

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Committee is set to discuss the proposal during a conference call on June 15.
