After the event underwhelmed in recent years, there's no question the 2016 Slam Dunk contest was one for the ages.

NBA players past and present expressed their fondness for Saturday night's competition between Aaron Gordon and Zach LaVine, with several calling it one of the greatest they had ever witnessed.

Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Blake Griffin were among those who rated the contest among the best of all time.

After the Orlando Magic and Minnesota Timberwolves sophomores posted back-to-back 50s during the second round, the contest turned into a sudden-death dunk-off, with LaVine ultimately winning out after posting a 50 on his sixth dunk of the night.

When asked whether he believed 2016's edition was the greatest Slam Dunk contest of all time, back-to-back champion LaVine told Sports Illustrated's Ben Golliver: "In my opinion, yes."
