Report: NBA looking into Warriors' Walton getting credit for victories

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has been on a leave of absence as he recovers from two offseason back surgeries, including one to repair a spinal leak.

Despite not coaching a single game in the 2015-16 season, Kerr has received credit for all 16 victories of the Warriors' historic undefeated streak, with interim coach Luke Walton being left out in the cold.

The NBA is now looking into the custom of interim coaches not being credited with wins, according to Bay Area Sports' Diamond Leung.

"It doesn't matter to me," Walton said of having the wins put on his record. "It really doesn't ... I'm good either way."

Kerr is a huge advocate for Walton, and feels his top assistant deserves to be recognized for the work he's done in his stead.

"I think it's ridiculous," Kerr said when asked for his thoughts on receiving Golden State's wins, according to ESPN's Ethan Strauss. "I'm sitting in the locker room and watching the games on TV, and I'm not even traveling to most of the road games. Luke's doing all the work with the rest of the staff. Luke is 15-0 right now. I'm not. So it's the dumbest thing I've ever heard, to be honest with you. I don't even understand it."

This conundrum begs the question who will win Western Conference Coach of the Month for November, because while Walton has manned the sidelines for an undefeated squad, his record, under NBA policy, is still 0-0.

The Warriors' will hit the road Friday as they look to extend their winning streak to 17 games against the 7-8 Phoenix Suns.
