Justise Winslow preparing for Heat's 'positionless' scheme

As rookie Justise Winslow described it, the Miami Heat are a "positionless organization."

That's why Winslow, the Heat's 10th overall selection, is working on a multitude of skills this summer.

"The offense, all the positions are pretty interchangeable. And so I'm working on all my skills," Winslow told Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel.

"Right now, I don't know as much what I'll be playing more of, two or three or the one," Winslow added. "And so, I'm just trying to become the best complete player, so not trying to put too much weight on so I could still move, but still trying to get stronger."

In an effort to expand his game, the 19-year-old Winslow has been working on a lengthy to-do list that includes improving his overall strength, ball-handling, and shooting in the hopes of becoming an interchangeable backcourt producer for a playoff hopeful like the Heat

At Duke, Winslow starred as a hyperathletic wing who generated points primarily through his defense, finishing spot-ups, and by slashing to the hoop. He excelled in that role, shooting 41.4 percent from deep while averaging 12.6 points and 2.1 assists.

Winslow struggled during Orlando Summer League, though, after being handed the responsibility of initiating offense and shot just 34.3 percent from the field.

Still, there's no denying Winslow's talent, and given the Heat's lack of depth, they should lean heavily on him to produce in a variety of roles.

For example, when Winslow shares the court with the Heat's star trio of Goran Dragic, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade, he'll rarely see the ball and mostly resort to spotting up.

But when Winslow plays with the bench, the Heat might look to make use of his playmaking abilities. The Heat are reportedly looking to shed Mario Chalmers's contract for salary relief purposes, and if they do, they'll need a replacement. That could be Winslow's responsibility if he tightens his handles, and learns the nuances of running an NBA offense.
