Report: 76ers interested in Kendall Marshall

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

The Philadelphia 76ers have shown interest in free-agent point guard Kendall Marshall, according to multiple reports, bringing him in to their facilities for the last several days in advance of a potential training camp deal.

There are seven Chipotle locations in The City of Brotherly Love, so the interest is likely to be mutual.

Adding Marshall would push the Sixers to the 20-man roster limit for camp, but with only 12 contracts guaranteed, the competition for the final few roster spots is wide open. General manager Sam Hinkie said in mid-August they're still exploring trade possibilities, but as it stands, point guard is a thin position for the team.

Marshall has had an up-and-down start to his NBA career after being selected by the Phoenix Suns No. 13 in 2012. He played sparingly as a rookie and was subsequently traded, and then waived, following his freshman campaign. He landed with the Los Angeles Lakers for 2013-14, putting up strong enough numbers that the Milwaukee Bucks saw fit to claim him when the Lakers waived him that summer.

Playing a smaller role in Milwaukee, Marshall tore his ACL after 28 games and was later included in a three-team trade back to Phoenix, who then waived him again.

Now on the recovery trail, the 24-year-old is left to prove himself healthy and worthy of a roster spot. In 130 career games, he's averaged 5.3 points and 5.4 assists in 20.6 minutes, and while he's only shot 40.5 percent overall, he's made himself into a steady 3-point shooter with a 37.7-percent career clip.

A creative passer who runs the pick-and-roll extremely well, Marshall is limited on the defensive end despite standing 6-foot-4. With his passing ability, his outside shot, and the likelihood of a reasonable price tag, Marshall is a good fit for the Sixers' strategy of identifying undervalued talent at the end of their roster.
