Superfan 'Spurs Jesus' stops robbery at his home

Erich Schlegel-USA TODAY Sports

One of the most recognizable fans in basketball is now a crime fighter, although he's hardly taken the mantle up by choice.

Cordero Maldonado, a San Antonio Spurs fan who often attends games dressed as Jesus Christ adorned in Spurs robes, foiled a robbery at his home this week.

"Spurs Jesus," as he's become known, wrote about the event on his Facebook page:

ALERT!! So yesterday I was at my house washing my garb and all of a sudden I hear a strange noise, sure enough there's a guy trying to break in through my window. I ran outside and chased him down the San Antonio Riverwalk.. Caught the fellow and slammed him to the dirt and restrained him until the boys from the San Antonio Police Department took him off of my hands. Big shout out and thanks to Rio Fit, LLC for keeping me strong and fast so I could catch that little punk! So sleep easySouthtown San Antonio & King William, there's a few less thieves on the streets! And just an FYI to anyone else out there who wants to try me... Don't think about it, I workout... A lot.. And nobody f_ _ _ s with the Spurs Jesus!

The suspect, 19-year-old Jose Roberto Medina, is facing charges of burglary of a habitation, according to Mark D. Wilson of the San Antonio Express-News. According to a police report, Medina was able to flee and then swam across the San Antonio River, only to realize he forgot his bike and needed to double back.

It all sounds quite weird. Mashable.com provides more detail:

Medina told Spurs Jesus he needed his bike back, according to the paper, and walked across a bridge, apparently thinking Spurs Jesus would simply give him his bike.

“The whole time I’m on the phone with police as he is walking toward me,” Spurs Jesus told theExpress-News. “I told 911 he was standing right there, and I would hold him down until they arrived.”

Spurs Jesus then tackled Medina and tried to subdue him, according to the paper. Medina was able to squirm away just as police arrived, reportedly jumping into the river a second time and attempting to hide from officers in a patch of tall grass. No dice - the officers found and arrested him.

One has to imagine Medina will lie about how he was apprehended, but he has a ready-made plea for leniency from the court: he's found Jesus.
