Report: Dikembe Mutombo met with group of potential Hawks investors

Is this ownership groups assembling to try and purchase the Atlanta Hawks, or a mid-90s discussion of the league's most exciting frontcourt players?

With Chris Webber already forming a group that has interest in buying the controlling stake of the Hawks franchise, and Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins potentially involved, NBA legend and former Hawks center Dikembe Mutombo could be throwing his hat in the ring too.

Mutombo has met with a group of interested investors about possibly joining in their bid to buy the team, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday. The group Mutombo would join includes local businessmen and may include other former NBA players.

The 48-year-old Mutombo is one of the league's most recognizable faces internationally and spent four-plus seasons with the Hawks from 1996 to 2001.

While it's still unclear exactly what percentage of the team is for sale - it could be anywhere from 50.1 percent but could go as high as 100 percent - and therefore what the sale price could rise too, multiple groups are reported to be preparing to get involved. That includes The Webber Group, this potential group involving Mutombo, a group involving entertainment lawyer Doug Davis, and at least three more.
