Will Warriors' trade for Blake be the biggest deal of the deadline?

A smaller name trade that involves more salary but doesn't move the needle much for either team involved is one thing to complain about, but a small trade that actually fills a need for a fringe contender is well worth our time, and if today's NBA trade deadline without much doing, Golden State's acquisition of Steve Blake last night might be the deal of the deadline.

The Warriors, who sit seventh in the West at 32-22, just 1.5 games clear of ninth-place (and surging Memphis) but also only four games behind the Pacific Division leading, fourth-seeded Clippers, gave up virtually nothing (with all due respect to Kent Bazemore and MarShon Brooks) to fill a painfully obvious need for a backup point guard behind Stephen Curry. And the guy they acquired to fill said hole is on a $4 million expiring contract, so as small as the deal seems, the 'Dubs' have managed to get something done at the deadline without giving up an ounce of future flexibility, a draft pick or a young asset. That's hard for a contender of any kind to accomplish.

Blake has struggled mightily this season shooting twos (just 35%) and he's simply not good enough to produce well in a starter's load of 33 minutes per game that he was getting in L.A., but he's still a more than capable facilitator who can knock down threes at an above average rate (39%), and he should fit in nicely with the Warriors in a smaller bench role and in two-point-guard lineups with Curry off the ball.

Now, with the 2014 trade deadline mere hours away, the question becomes will another anticlimactic deadline see this Warriors/Lakers deal become its marquee move (Sorry, Marcus Thornton)?

With all due respect to Blake, let's hope not, because while we know deadlines usually end up being buzz-kills, the star quality of the names used to tease us this year have been on another level, and ending the day talking about Blake instead of Rondo or even a name like Asik would be kind of a downer.

As a refresher, here's a list of all the names at least rumored to either be in play or coveted today, in no particular order: Rajon Rondo, Kenneth Faried, Kyle Lowry, Harrison Barnes, Jeff Teague, Jeremy Lin, Raymond Felton, Tim Hardaway Jr., Iman Shumper (before he got hurt last night), Jarrett Jack, Jordan Hill, Brook Lopez, Omer Asik, Spencer Hawes, Evan Turner, Thaddeus Young, Brandon Bass, Gordon Hayward, Greg Monroe, Rodney Stuckey, Luol Deng, Luke Ridnour, Larry Sanders, Eric Gordon, Gary Neal, Andre Miller, Ben Gordon, Kevin Love, Tayshaun Prince, Tony Allen, Chase Budinger, J.J. Barea, Jared Dudley, Darren Collison, Pau Gasol, Emeka Okafor, Isaiah Thomas, and Jordan Hill.

Now obviously only a very small fraction of those players may actually be available, but you get the picture, this season's trade deadline rumors have been as star-studded as ever.

So get excited, but also be prepared for the Warriors and Steve Blake to maybe win the day.
